Life at the bench

Updated: Apr 6, 2019

Welcome, come in, pull up a chair....so this is the hilomilo blog. This will hopefully be a space in which I can keep a record of the more day to day aspects of life at the bench in my jewellery workshop, share photos of ongoing work and the beautiful area that we're in. I'll also share the odd tutorial and give you a sneak peek of what goes on behind the scenes at hilomilo.

Our shop and workshop hilomilo is based in the lovely market town called Sleaford in the heart of rural Lincolnshire. We're in a quirky little building that by all accounts was once a toll booth for the canal and that on one side actually sits in the River Slea, home of kingfishers, moorhens and ducks aplenty.

All of the jewellery that we produce at hilomilo has been carefully handmade using traditional metalworking skills that date back centuries and whether you're looking for gold or silver, precious or semi-precious stones we can always make something to suit.

I was happy to discover recently that metal-working has been happening in Sleaford as long ago as the Iron Age. A collection of coin pellet moulds and crucible fragments was found suggesting that an important Iron Age mint had been located in the town. You can read more about that here http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=MLI60583&resourceID=1006

So on a day to day basis, I sit at the workbench that was handcrafted for me from British Elm that fell in the storms of '87, working away soldering, hammering or filing, making commissions or stock for the window, often with Radio 4 comedies in the background. This week however I've been binge listening to The Guilty Feminist podcast hosted by comedian Deborah Francis-White http://guiltyfeminist.com/episodes/ ,

definitely worth a listen.

I'm aiming to post periodically and Valentine's Day is fast approaching so my next post will take a look at some of the lovelies that we've been working on for that.

Thanks so much for reading x
